Welcome to Olive Class. Our topic this half term is 'Fire and Ice'.

Onger Fire Station visit

We are learning about the Great Fire of London so went to Ongar Fire Station to look at the similarities and differences between the emergency services today compared to in 1666.  We met the firemen who showed us their uniform, all the different equipment on the fire engines, how they get the water onto the fire engines to be stored and the different ways of using the water to put the fire out (with demonstrations!).  They even put the sirens and lights on for us!  We had such fun learning about the fire service today, have a look at the photos of us there.

Our recreation of the Great Fire of London

We learnt that the houses in 1666 were made from wood and that is one of the main contributors to the fire being so disastrous.  We looked carefully at the styles of the houses and made our own in class.  We then recreated the fire by setting them alight and watching the flames travel between the houses - just like in 1666.  We then became fire fighters and had to work together to pass water up the line in canvas buckets so that we could use the hand pump fire extinguisher to put the flames out!  Have a look at the photos of us in action.
